For the artisan … a classic English four-fold boxwood ruler, model number 1375 by Rabone, likely dating from the early 1950s, but possibly earlier.  Measuring 24-inches when fully extended, one side of the ruler is marked in 1/8-inch increments, the other side in 1/16 inches.  The brass hinges and end caps show minor tarnish consistent with age, but the ruler folds easily and smoothly, and all markings remain crisp and legible.  With a rich patina, this would make an ideal gift for a craftsman, teacher, or collector of vintage tools.

John Rabone & Sons were a pre-eminent British manufacturer of rules and measuring devices, with origins dating back to the late 1700s.  The No. 1375 “slimline” model was produced during the mid-20th century, with documented examples dating from the 1930s to the 1950s. Rabone operated as a family business until it merged with Chesterman & Co of Sheffield in 1963.

Size: 24” x 1/2” x 1/8”
Weight: 1.7 oz.

Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall.  Hinges and end caps show slight tarnish, and there is minor staining to the wood, all consistent with age and use.  Tiny chip at 19-1/2” mark (see photo).  Ruler folds easily and securely.  Marked “BOXWOOD,” “RABONE,” “MADE IN ENGLAND,” AND “NO. 1375.” See photos for more detail and feel free to contact the shop with any questions before purchase.
