For the angler …  a classic 3-inch Nottingham-style wood and brass “starback” fishing reel from the late 1800s/early 1900s.  Crafted from hardwood (possibly mahogany, given the dark hue), the reel features a sturdy brass footing and back plate, and black ebonite handles. A rich, warm patina makes it an attractive addition to a gentleman’s desk, shelf, or side table, perfect as a rustic or coastal décor accent, or as a thoughtful gift for the discerning angler or boating enthusiast.

Nottingham-style reels, so called because they were built in or around Nottingham, England, are typically light, free-running, wooden reels designed for river fishing. They resemble fly reels, and some were used for fly fishing, but the majority were used for bait fishing.

The starback design, whereby the reel is reinforced with a cast brass star-shaped back plate, emerged in the mid-19th century as reel manufacturers sought ways to enhance the strength and performance of their products.  Starback reels were most popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and today are considered highly collectible.

Dimensions: Spool: 3” diameter x 1-7/8”, Footing 2-1/2”
