For the artisan … an authentic cobbler’s glazing iron, dating to roughly 1920-1940, formed with a turned hardwood handle (likely beech), brass collar, and shaped steel working head.  Designed to compress and polish leather edges, this traditional shoemaker’s tool retains its blackened shoulder at the top of the handle and an honest patina from decades of workshop use. Its compact size and sculptural profile make it a unique and distinctive display piece for a gentleman’s desk, bookshelf, or side table.

Glazing irons of this type were used by shoemakers, cobblers, and leather workers to finish the edges of leather soles and stacked heels.  The steel head was gently heated on a stove or near a small flame, and then worked under pressure along the leather edge to produce a hard, polished finish. The shaped head allowed the craftsman to work flat sole edges, waist curves, and tighter heel profiles with a single tool.

Dimensions: 5-5/8” x 2-1/8” (head) x 7/8”
Weight: 5.4 oz.

Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall with light, honest wear consistent with age and use. Handle displays scattered surface marks, areas of age-related discoloration, and the characteristic blackened surface at the shoulder. Brass collar remains bright and clean, with what appear to be remnants of earlier polish. Steel head shows even age-related discoloration and surface patina consistent with, with no active rust, structural damage, or evidence of later repair. All elements remain firmly joined with no looseness, movement, or wobble between handle, ferrule, and steel head. Tool has been lightly cleaned and waxed to remove surface grime while intentionally preserving its original working patina. No visible maker’s marks noted. Other items in photos not included.
