For the mixologist … a clean and well-preserved 1950s edition of the bartending classic “Cocktails: How to Mix Them” by Robert Vermeire of the American Bar, Casino Municipal in Nice, and the Embassy Club, London. This compact, mid-century British edition (18th printing, published by Herbert Jenkins of London), features the iconic Art Deco cover, a tight binding, and pages in excellent condition. Containing more than 300 drink recipes—together with expert advice on tools, technique, and a well-stocked home bar—it would make a welcome addition to any gentleman’s library and a standout gift for the cocktail enthusiast.
Originally published in 1922, “Cocktails” includes recipes for forgotten favorites like the Bosom Caresser and Horse’s Neck, alongside timeless staples such as the Martini, Sidecar, and Manhattan. Inside you’ll find instructions for toddies, egg nogs, punches, slings, and sours, as well as a chapter of distinctly boozy “prescriptions” for ailments ranging from headaches to sea-sickness. As the author notes: "Some liqueurs and certain cocktails, mixed properly, and when taken at the right time, possess great medicinal qualities." Measurements throughout are given in old gills and half-gills, adding a distinctly British flair. (For reference: one UK half-gill equals approximately 2.4 US ounces.)
Dimensions: 6-1/2” x 3-3/4” x 5/8”
Weight: 3.6 oz.
Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall. Hardcover binding remains structurally sound, with only minor separation visible along the inner rear cover; all gatherings remain securely bound and the book opens and closes cleanly. Spine shows fading, light surface staining and discoloration, and back cover exhibits small scattered marks and fading consistent with age. No dust jacket present. Interior pages are clean and well-preserved, with no visible foxing, stains, or dog-earing. No inscriptions, annotations, or other markings observed. A solid and highly presentable example of this mid-century edition. See photos for more detail. Other items in photos not included.
