Collectible Wheatley Fly Box with 15 Trout & Salmon Flies | Vintage Mid-Century Silmalloy Clip Case

For the angler …  a classic mid-century Wheatley fly box in brushed aluminum, measuring 4-3/4” x 3-1/2” and complete with 15 vintage trout and salmon flies neatly arranged across original metal clip plates. Compact, elegant, and deeply collectible, it would make an ideal gift for the sporting gentleman or fishing enthusiast.

This particular box was sourced in Scotland, the spiritual home of fly fishing, and includes 15 vintage flies in a mix of classic wet trout and featherwing salmon patterns, tied with traditional materials like tinsel, mallard wing, and dyed hackles. Notable among them: a Blue Charm–style salmon fly and several trout dressings reminiscent of the March Brown and Peter Ross. A refined and functional selection, British in origin, that echoes the tradition and romance of Highland waters.

Richard Wheatley of England has been producing precision fly boxes since 1860, and remains one of the most respected names in British angling. Their patented clip-plate system and durable “Silmalloy” aluminum has made them the box of choice for serious fly fishers for more than a century.  Today, vintage Wheatley boxes are highly sought after for their timeless design, quality craftsmanship, and enduring field utility.

Condition Notes: Overall, in very good condition, with clean interior plates and secure, fully functional brass clips. Aluminum body shows light surface wear consistent with age, including minor scratches and a few small marks on the reverse (see photos), but retains a smooth, matte finish throughout. Box closes firmly and evenly with no warping, dents, or hinge issues.  Marked “Wheatley” and “Made in England.”

Includes 15 original vintage flies in a mix of wet trout and featherwing salmon patterns. Most are in good to very good condition, with intact wings, hackle, and heads; a few show light age-related wear or loose fibers typical of period materials. Flies appear lightly used but carefully stored, and remain suitable for display or gentle use.
