For the man of character … an attractive late Victorian hip flask, elegantly crafted in leather and silver plate with a sterling silver cap.  The lower half of the flask is a removable drinking cup, while the cap has a cork lining, screws on and off smoothly, and bears London hallmarks for 1877-78.  The maker’s mark is indistinct but strongly suggests Henry Titterton Brockwell (HTB), a distinguished London silversmith known for silver-mounted accessories including ink bottles, scent bottles, and flasks.

At 5-1/4” high, this particular flask was a well-traveled companion.  The silver-plated cup shows rubbing consistent with use, and the cap has developed the characteristic dents of a life well-lived.  The original leather cover has a smooth texture and remains remarkably well-preserved with only minimal wear.  Overall, this is a piece of immense character, in very good condition, and would make an exceptional addition to a gentleman’s desk, side table, or silver collection.

Condition notes: Dents to cap as is common for sterling silver of this age.  Marks on cap for duty paid, sterling silver, date mark (1877-78) and London town mark.  Makers mark (HT?) is partially rubbed.  Cup is unmarked but for the number “4” on the base, and shows some base metal but polishes beautifully.  No chips or cracks to glass.  Leather shows only minimal wear and is in remarkable condition.  See photos for more detail and feel free to contact the shop with any questions before purchase.
