For the craftsman … a fine 19th-century English coffin plane, measuring 7-1/2" in length and made from dense, richly patinated hardwood. Tactile and timeworn, this classic smoothing plane was likely used for final surface finishing in cabinetmaking and fine joinery. It would make a striking addition to a gentleman’s desk, workshop, or display shelf—equally suited for the carpenter, collector, or anyone who appreciates honest tools of a bygone age.
Coffin planes like this were a staple of British joiners' shops into the early 1900s, used primarily for smoothing surfaces to a fine finish, and often customized to suit their owner's grip and working style. This particular example bears the name stamp of F.C. BRAYBROOKE, likely the original tradesman, and features a later brass cross-pin reinforcement—a thoughtful repair that suggests it was valued enough to remain in use well into the 20th century. Blade, wedge, and body are all intact, with a clean mouth and tight fit throughout. In all, both a working tool and a handsome artifact of workshop history.
Size: 7-1/2” x 3” (not including wedge) x 2-5/8”
Weight: 1 lb. 13 oz.
Condition notes: Good antique condition overall, with darkening, scratches, and overall surface wear consistent with age and regular use. Hardwood body remains solid and well-formed with no structural cracks, and plane retains a beautiful, time-earned patina throughout. Stamped with the original owner’s name, “F.C. BRAYBROOKE,” on top and both ends; no visible maker’s mark. Blade appears sharp and is firmly seated, held in place by a wooden wedge and later brass cross-pin reinforcement. Blade and wedge may be removable but have not been tested. See photos for more detail and feel free to contact the shop with any questions before purchase.
