Early 1900s Nottingham Fishing Reel | 3-Inch Wood & Brass Antique Reel with Ebonite Handles

For the outdoorsman … an attractive 3-inch Nottingham-style wood and brass fishing reel from the early 1900s, turned from fine hardwood with a brass strap foot and backplate, neatly incised concentric rings, and ebonite handles. The reel retains a rich dark color and original varnish, showing light marks and general wear consistent with age and use.  The ebonite handles and free-running design (lacking an on-off check) date the reel to around 1900–1910. It would make an inspired gift for the angler, and a distinctive display piece for a gentleman’s desk, study, or side table.

Nottingham-style reels originated in and around Nottingham, England, where they evolved from techniques used to make wooden spools used in lace-making. Nottingham reels are typically light, free-running, wooden reels primarily designed for river fishing.  By the late 1800s they had become the dominant style of reel in Britain, and their simple but effective design influenced reel-making well into the 20th century.

Condition Notes: Overall in very good vintage condition, with light scratches and other wear consistent with age and use. Brass back plate and strap foot show natural tarnish from handling and time. Wood retains a rich, dark patina and original varnish, with some areas of wear. No visible maker’s mark. Spool runs freely (no on-off ratchet); recommended for decorative use only.
