For the craftsman … a handsome 19th-century carriage maker’s plane by W. Greenslade of Bristol, featuring an iron blade secured by a traditional wooden wedge, and a brass plate at the mouth. In excellent condition, the plane bears the owner’s stamp (“E.H. Bullock”) and displays a rich, warm patina with the expected marks and wear from years of careful use. Recommended for decorative use only, it would make a striking addition to a gentleman’s library shelf, workshop, or vintage tool collection.
The plane features a wider sole than the body itself, a design typical of carriage-maker’s planes that allowed craftsmen to reach into tight or curved spaces. Greenslade were renowned toolmakers who operated in Bristol from 1828 to 1937 – the stamp “W. Greenslade – Bristol” dates this model from 1833-1846, before the firm changed names to E.A. & W. Greenslade, and during the heyday of horse-drawn carriages. Like most British planes of the period, this piece is likely made from beech, a tough and stable hardwood favored for its durability and resistance to warping. The addition of a brass wear plate is a feature of higher quality planes, serving to reduce friction and prolong its working life.
Dimensions: (Body) 6-1/4” x 3-3/8” x 1-3/8”
Weight: 9.7 ounces
Condition Notes: In excellent antique condition, with the coloration and surface marks expected from years of careful use. The wooden body is clean and solid, showing no cracks or major damage. The iron blade displays some light tarnish, typical of age, but is intact and secure. Stamped “E.H. Bullock” (original owner) and “W. Greenslade, Bristol” (maker’s mark, 1833–1846) on the body. The brass wear plate at the mouth is smooth with minimal tarnish. The wedge and blade may be removable for sharpening, as is typical of wooden planes of this period, but we have not attempted this ourselves. Recommended for decorative use only. See photos for full detail and feel free to contact the shop with any questions before purchase.
