Edwardian Brass Vesta Case in Book Form c. 1902-1910 | Antique English Match Safe

For the collector … a charming Edwardian brass vesta case by C. E. Brann & Co., London, measuring approximately 2 inches in height and dating from around 1902–1910.  Designed to resemble a miniature book, it features a monogrammed cartouche (“HM”) on the cover, a ribbed match striker, a spring-loaded lid, and a suspension loop for attachment to a watch chain.  Originally the piece was silver plated, but years of handling have left an attractive two-tone finish.  An intriguing little object, it would make a distinctive gift for a collector of books or gentleman’s smoking accessories.

Vesta cases, also known as match safes, protected small friction matches from moisture and accidental ignition in an era before disposable lighters became widely available. Our example was designed to hang from an Albert chain and would have been carried in a gentleman’s waistcoat pocket. C. E. Brann & Co. is listed in an 1895 London trade directory as a merchant of notions, a category covering small manufactured goods and personal accessories.

Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall, with age-related wear to original silver-plated finish throughout revealing brass beneath and creating an attractive two-tone appearance. Minor surface marks, small scratches, and tarnish are consistent with age and regular handling. Book-form case remains structurally sound, with decorative details still clearly defined. Cover bears a heavily rubbed engraved monogram reading “HM.” Spring-loaded lid opens and closes smoothly, snapping back firmly as intended. Ribbed striker remains intact along outer edge. Base bears clearly legible stamped marks reading “Rd # 387671” and “C.E.B. & Co.” No cracks, splits, or repairs observed. Other items in photos not included.
