For the explorer …  a rare and unique Edwardian gentleman’s measuring case, crafted in richly patterned leather and housing a 33-foot cloth tape with markings for inches and links, a built-in notepad, and its original propelling pencil. At just over 3 inches square when closed, it’s a compact and refined accessory—designed for a man on the go and in the field.  A highly unusual piece of kit, full of quiet character, it would make a charming display piece on a desk, side table, or library shelf.

Sourced in Scotland, the case features a smoothly functioning brass-wind tape and a fold-out flap revealing the owner’s name (Mr. John Tamse) and its original paper pad and pencil slot. While tapes of this era often included links as a standard measure, the dual-scale format here suggests practical versatility more than strict surveying purpose.  Intended less for heavy-duty trade and more for practical use, it’s the sort of instrument a gentleman in the field might carry to keep essential tools close at hand.

Dimensions (Closed): 3-1/4” x 3-3/8” x 1”
Weight: 5.2 ounces

Condition Notes: Overall in very good vintage condition, with minor surface wear and scattered marks to leather consistent with age and gentle use. Small tear visible just below stitched tab that secures the folding flap.  All stitching remains intact and case opens and closes cleanly. Tape winds smoothly using brass crank, though we have not attempted to extend it to full length. Scale markings on cloth tape are clear and legible throughout; numeral “2” is partially worn due to wear on first few inches. Original paper notepad is yellowed with age but remains securely adhered inside the flap. Propelling pencil rotates as intended and may be functional but is currently without lead. Brass components show only minimal tarnish. A complete and well-preserved example of a rare Edwardian measuring case. Other items in photos not included.
