Edwardian Walking Cane with Silver-Plated Pommel Top and Malacca Shaft | Early 1900s Antique English Walking Stick

For the city gent … a handsome Edwardian walking cane with silver-plated pommel top and malacca shaft, dating to the early 1900s. Measuring a smidge over 34 inches in length, it retains its original ferrule and shows a handsome patina from more than a century of use. A refined accessory for its time, it would be a striking addition to an umbrella stand, a cane collection, or as a display piece in a gentleman’s study.

At the turn of the 20th century, no gentleman’s outfit was complete without a walking cane—carried less for support or protection than as a marker of taste and social standing. Malacca, a cane from the rattan family, was a popular choice and prized for its strength, light weight, and distinctive natural texture.  Silver-topped canes like this one signaled polish and refinement, setting them apart from plainer country sticks and thus more suitable for city streets or gentleman’s clubs.

Condition notes: Overall in very good condition, displaying wear consistent with age and use. Silver-plated pommel top decorated with repoussé foliate scrollwork, much of the surface detail rubbed from handling, with light surface dents on crown. No visible hallmarks. Small gaps in silver plate visible from normal handling. Malacca shaft straight and solid with warm patina throughout. Original or period ferrule of mixed metal secured with small nail, showing surface wear but firmly in place. Item has been lightly polished and waxed.  Other items in photos not included.
