For the man on the go … a handsome English travel compass in hardwood case (likely mahogany), dating to around 1895–1915. Measuring 2-5/8 inches square when closed, it features brass hinges and hook clasp, its original glass cover, and a finely printed 360-degree dial. The case bears a period “5 shilling” ink price mark to one edge, a surviving trace of its original Edwardian retail sale.  Still fully functional, the compass would make a treasured gift for the well-traveled collector and a distinctive display piece for a desk or side table.

Boxed compasses of this type were carried by military officers, surveyors, and serious travelers in the years leading up to and through the First World War. Many were retailed through British outfitters and ironmongers as practical travel instruments—compact enough for a coat pocket, but housed in a sturdy hardwood case to protect the mechanism. Our example remains in excellent working order, with a blued steel needle and a functioning transit lock that secures the movement when closed.

Dimensions: 2-5/8” x 2-5/8” x  5/8” (closed)
Weight: 1.5 ounces

Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall. Hardwood case shows only light surface wear and a few small marks consistent with age and careful use, and retains a period “5/–” (5 shillings) handwritten price mark to one edge from its original retail sale. Brass hinges and hook clasp remain tight and fully functional. Original glass cover is intact and free of scratches, with age bloom visible beneath the glass, typical of untouched examples and not affecting operation. Compass shows smooth needle action with a blued steel needle that points north as intended. Finely printed 360-degree dial remains clear and legible throughout. Transit lock functions correctly, securing the movement when closed. No maker’s mark present. Case has been lightly polished.  Other items in photos not included.
