For the sportsman … a handsome vintage English riding crop, measuring 23-3/4 inches in length and dating to around 1905–1930. The crop is constructed with a natural antler grip, white metal collar, woven cord-bound shaft, and original leather keeper, all remaining secure and in excellent vintage condition. Compact and well-balanced, it would make a thoughtful gift and distinctive display piece for a gentleman’s library, home office, or tack room.
Short crops of this type were carried for hunting, schooling, and everyday riding, offering precise control and quick communication with the horse, often fitted with a leather lash at the tip for added reach when needed. Antler handles provided a textured grip in wet field conditions, while cord-bound shafts offered flexibility over a cane core without adding unnecessary weight. Ferrules stamped “STEEL LINED” like our example are typical on British crops from the late Victorian through the interwar period, and refer to an internal steel sleeve fitted to reinforce the joint between the handle and the shaft.
Dimensions: 23-3/4” (including loop) x 4-3/4” (handle) x 5/8” (top of cord-wrapped shaft)
Weight: 4.2 oz.
Condition Notes: Overall in excellent antique condition, displaying only light wear consistent with age and careful use. Natural antler handle remains clean and well preserved, with attractive color and surface character throughout, with no visible cracks, chips, or structural issues. White metal collar (likely nickel silver) is stamped “STEEL LINED” and shows scattered surface marks, areas of age-related oxidation, and minor loss to original finish near lower edge, all consistent with period use. Woven cord-bound shaft remains tight and secure throughout, with no visible fraying, tears, or separation to binding. Original leather loop at tip remains securely attached, showing normal age-related surface wear and supple character. All elements remain firmly joined, with no wobble, shifting, or evidence of later repair. Other items shown in photos not included.
