For the man on the go … a handsome James Dixon leather-clad hip flask, Model 581A, dating to the 1950s-1960s. Measuring just over 4 inches in height, it holds 3/32 pint (approximately 2-1/4 ounces) and is clad in light tan pigskin with a detachable silver-plated cup and a bayonet-style cork-lined cap. In excellent condition with little wear to leather or plate, it would be ideal for discreet carry in a gentleman’s jacket pocket or displayed on a favorite side table.
Founded in Sheffield in 1806, James Dixon & Sons became one of Britain’s major producers of silver and electroplated wares, including hip flasks, tableware, and sporting goods, and continued large-scale production well into the 20th century. By the 1950s, the Dixon catalog included compact flasks such as ours, intended to provide a lighter, more portable alternative for either short outings or more formal occasions where discretion mattered.
Dimensions: 4-3/8” x 2-1/2” x 7/8”
Weight: 5.9 oz.
Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall. Silver plate on the detachable cup remains bright, showing only light surface marks from age and handling and no visible dents or distortion. Bayonet-style cork-lined cap screws on and off smoothly and secures firmly in place. Pigskin leather wrap is tight, clean, and well-fitted with very little wear, and no lifting, cracks, or separation at seams. Glass body is clear and free of visible cracks, chips, or clouding. Detachable silver-plated cup removes easily and fits securely. Base stamped “J D & S” with the Dixon trumpet mark, “EPBM,” “581A,” “MADE IN ENGLAND,” and “3/32 PT.” Collar beneath cap stamped “JD&S” on one side and the Dixon trumpet logo on the other.
