English Stanley No. 102 Block Plane | Vintage Mid-Century Tool with Wooden Bun-Wedge

For the craftsman … an attractive, compact mid-century Stanley No. 102 block plane, made in England and fitted with a later, one-piece wooden bun-wedge in place of the original metal lever cap. The cast-iron body retains a clean, even finish, and the English-marked Stanley iron sits firmly in its bed. At just over 5 inches long, it’s a small, sculptural plane with warm wood grain and strong visual presence – an ideal addition to a gentleman’s desk, library shelf, or workshop display.

Stanley’s English division, established after WWII in Sheffield, produced many of the company’s most reliable small planes for the British and European markets.  The No. 102 was designed as a simple, palm-sized block plane for trimming, fitting, and everyday bench tasks. Lightweight and quick to set, it became a go-to tool for joiners who wanted precision without bulk. The wooden bun-wedge on our example gives the plane a warm, crafted character that makes it particularly appealing as a display piece.

Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall. Cast-iron body shows minimal surface wear with only light speckling and no pitting, cracks, or structural issues.  Stanley-marked iron is clean and appears sharp, though has not been sharpened or tested in use. Body is marked “102 MADE IN ENG” and iron is stamped “STANLEY MADE IN ENGLAND”.  One-piece wooden bun-wedge is smooth, well-fitted, and removable for blade adjustment or sharpening, with no splits, chips, or looseness. Plane has been lightly waxed and polished while retaining its original patina. Other items in photos not included.
