For the sportsman … an extraordinary Edwardian hunting crop by renowned livery company Swaine & Adeney, hallmarked London 1911 and measuring a full 28 inches in length.  Featuring a carved antler/horn handle (likely deer), dual sterling silver collars, and a silver maker’s badge, this superbly preserved piece, from Britain’s premier outfitter of equestrian and gentleman’s gear, would make a treasured gift for any collector of fine sporting antiques and period accessories.

Founded in 1750, Swaine & Adeney built a reputation as London’s foremost outfitter of riding equipment, umbrellas, canes, and luxury sporting goods. By the early 20th century, their name had become synonymous with quality and tradition, supplying well-heeled clients for whom quality, tradition, and style were paramount.  Today, Swaine & Adeney stands as one of Britain’s oldest luxury brands, continuing a tradition of craftsmanship that spans more than 270 years.

Hunting crops like this served both practical and social roles in the field. Designed for foxhunting across country terrain, they combined a carved horn handle (often shaped for opening gates), a stiff shaft for subtle horse control, and a leather thong to which was attached a longer lash for signaling hounds. This example stands apart not only for its exemplary condition but also for its two hallmarked silver collars and silver maker’s badge, marking it as a top-tier model from London’s finest house.

Size: 28” (including thong) x 5-1/2” (handle) x 3/4"
Weight: 7.5 oz.

Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall. Carved horn handle is smooth and well-preserved, with no discernible chips or cracks.  Upper section retains its original leather wrap, tight and intact with minimal surface wear.  Lower shaft is wrapped in tightly braided linen/flax cord over a flexible core, finished with a waxed coating that remains smooth and evenly toned with no visible fraying.  Sterling silver fittings include two collars, both clearly hallmarked including date letter for 1911 and maker’s mark ESA for Swaine & Adeney Ltd. Inset silver maker’s badge on the handle top is crisply struck, reading SWAINE & ADENEY LTD. LONDON. All components are sound and firmly joined, with no cracks or structural issues. Piece has been gently cleaned and polished, taking care to preserve its authentic patina.  In all, a rare and exceptionally preserved example of Swaine & Adeney’s Edwardian craftsmanship at its peak.  See photos for full detail and feel free to contact the shop with any questions before purchase.
