French Wooden Snuff Box with Inlaid Cottage Motif c. 1870-1900 | Late Victorian Gentleman’s Accessory

For the man of style … an antique French wooden snuff box, likely originating from Brittany, dating from around 1870–1900. Crafted from dark hardwood with white-metal end caps, it features an inlaid cottage motif in white metal, brass-toned decorative scrollwork, and a band of mother-of-pearl accents across the lower portion of the lid. At just under 3 inches in length, it retains a rich aged patina and would display well on a gentleman’s dresser or side table, perhaps as a small container for cufflinks or other keepsakes.

Snuff boxes of this type were popular throughout Britain and Continental Europe during the late nineteenth century, when snuff-taking remained a common daily habit. Small wooden examples were valued for their durability and compact size, making them easy to carry in a waistcoat or coat pocket.  The combination of hardwood construction, metal inlay, and mother-of-pearl ornament seen here is typical of French provincial snuff boxes from the period.

Condition Notes: Excellent antique condition overall. Lid opens easily and closes firmly with no sticking or warping.  Hardwood body retains a rich aged patina and presents well throughout, showing only light surface wear and handling marks consistent with age and use. No visible dents, cracks, chips, or structural issues observed. White-metal mounts remain securely attached and display expected age-related wear. Inlaid decoration remains largely intact, with only a small section of mother-of-pearl accent missing near one corner of lid, visible only upon close inspection. Interior is clean, with oxidation present around hinge area consistent with age and historic exposure to moisture. Box has been lightly cleaned while retaining original character and patina.
