For the traveler … a handsome English gentleman’s travel compass in hardwood case (likely mahogany), dating from the early 1900s. At just under three inches square, it features brass hinges and dual hook clasps, a clear glass cover, and a finely printed 360-degree dial. Still functional, it would make a treasured gift for the gentleman traveler and a unique display piece for a desk or side table.
Boxed compasses of this type were standard kit for military officers, surveyors, and serious travelers in the years before and during the First World War. Many were made in Britain or France by specialist instrument makers and sold through outfitters supplying explorers and the officer class. Its portable size and sturdy construction made it reliable in the field while still refined enough to be carried by a gentleman on expedition. This example remains in excellent working order, with a blue-tipped needle pointing north, a functioning transit lock that secures the mechanism when closed, smooth action, and only light age to the brass hardware.
Dimensions: 2-13/16” x 2-3/4” x 7/8”
Weight: 2.1 oz.
Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall. Hardwood case shows small dents and light scratches consistent with age and use. Brass hinges and dual hook clasps display only light tarnish and remain secure and fully functional. Glass cover is clear and free of scratches. Compass is functional, with smooth needle action that may occasionally require a gentle nudge; blue-and-white needle points north as intended. Finely printed 360-degree dial is intact and legible. No maker’s mark present. Clasps engage easily and hold firmly closed. See photos for more detail and feel free to contact the shop with any questions prior to purchase.
