For the angler … a well-appointed mid-century fly box by esteemed maker Hardy Bros, in japanned steel (a traditional black lacquered finish) with riveted maker’s badge and original felt-lined interior. Sourced in Scotland, the box contains a curated set of more than 60 hand-tied trout and salmon flies — a rare and well-balanced collection, cleanly arranged with multiple matched patterns and period materials. This is a display-worthy assortment that would make a special gift for the gentleman angler.
Dating from around 1935-1955, the flies included here reflect a distinctly British sensibility: wet flies and soft-hackle patterns for trout; featherwing salmon flies; and larger attractor patterns tied with materials believed to include jungle cock, golden pheasant crest, and peacock herl—many of which are no longer widely available due to trade or wildlife restrictions. Several flies are tied on double hooks, and a few retain short sections of original gut or monofilament, making this a working angler’s box as well as a singular display of the fly-tier’s craft.
Hardy Bros, established in 1872 in Alnwick, Northumberland, have long been renowned for their rods, reels, and fly tackle, supplying sportsmen across Britain and abroad. By the early 20th century, they held royal warrants from King George V and Edward VIII, and their products were regarded as the finest available for the serious angler. Their fly boxes — including this steel-bodied model — were designed for decades of use and remain highly sought after by collectors.

Condition notes: Good vintage condition overall, showing moderate wear consistent with field use. Japanned steel body has surface scratches, small dents, scattered marks, and worn edges, but remains structurally solid. Riveted Hardy Bros maker’s badge is intact and legible. Box does not close completely flush, but remains fully functional for storage or display. Original felt-lined interior shows age-related wear, including scattered holes, but remains stable and well-suited for pinning. Fly condition is variable (see photos), with most in good to excellent vintage condition. Several flies retain cut tippet; a few show minor bending or loose hackles, but majority remain structurally intact and well preserved. Other items in photos not included.
