Hockley Abbey 6-Inch Spirit Level in Walnut & Brass | Vintage English Tool from Late 1930s by Rabone

For the craftsman …  an attractive 6-inch “Hockley Abbey” spirit level in brass and walnut, dating from the late 1930s to early 1940s.  This is a compact, workmanlike tool with a clean, functional design and balanced proportions—once a fixture in the kit of joiners and cabinetmakers.  The single horizontal vial remains intact and operational, and the hardwood body exhibits a warm, time-earned patina, making this both a practical tool and a fine display piece for a gentleman’s study or workshop.

The Hockley Abbey name refers not to a maker but to the factory complex of John Rabone & Sons in Birmingham’s Jewelry Quarter, from which the company operated for nearly a century. Tools carrying the Hockley Abbey brand marked a transitional phase in Rabone’s production before its 1963 merger with Chesterman of Sheffield. The No. 1621 pocket level typifies that period: a solid walnut core, machined brass top plate, and engraved markings guaranteed “Warranted Correct.”

Condition Notes: Overall in excellent vintage condition, with light surface wear and small marks consistent with careful use. Solid walnut body retains a smooth finish and warm, even patina throughout. Single horizontal vial remains intact, clear, and fully functional with no cracks or leakage. Brass top plate shows minor tarnish and faint scratches typical of age, all secure with original screws. Markings remain crisp and legible: “TRADE MARK HOCKLEY ABBEY MADE IN ENGLAND” and “WARRANTED NO.1621 CORRECT.”  Piece has been lightly polished and waxed.  Other items in photos not included.
