A large, 14-inch wood and brass spirit level made by Henry Disston & Sons of Philadelphia, possibly from around 1930. The level’s classic, rectangular form has a wonderful rustic quality and would display beautifully in a library, study, or workshop. It bears the marks “PAT OCT. 29 1912” and “HENRY DISSTON & SONS, KEYSTONE TOOL WORKS, PHILADA, USA”. The reddish tinge of the wood suggests it could be rosewood or cherry, both of which are known to have been used by the company. (The 1912 patent is for the carved and raised “ribs” at the hand grip location.)
Born in Tewkesbury, England in 1819, Henry Disston moved to America with his parents at age 14, only for his father to die 3 days after their arrival. Disston went on to found the Keystone Saw Works at age 21, and grew the company into the world’s top manufacturer of saws through the Civil War (during which it also supplied steel products to the Union Army) and into the early 20th century. The “Keystone Tool Works” brand was used as early as 1878, as the company expanded its product line. Disston’s five sons all went on to become officers in the company, eventually selling to HK Porter Inc. in the mid-1950s.
Dimensions: 14” x 2-1/8” x 1-1/16”
Weight: 15.6 ounces
Condition Notes: Vial is intact and functions as intended (though not tested for accuracy) and the brass plate is bright and clear with minimal tarnish. The body of the level shows some wear to the edges and some patches of discoloration but overall has a beautiful rich patina. For its age, the tool is in excellent vintage condition.
