For the mariner … a striking 8-foot vintage naval signal pennant, made in 1998 by Porter Brothers of Liverpool. Constructed from durable signal bunting—likely a cotton blend typical of late 20th-century maritime flags—this official-use pennant features a clean white field with a bold navy-blue band and remains in excellent condition, making it a commanding display piece for a gentleman’s study or coastal getaway.
Our flag is a “DESIG” signal pennant, used to indicate “Proceeding to Station/Berth.” It was flown aboard naval ships, merchant marine vessels, and harbor service craft to coordinate movement during berthing operations, fleet exercises, or port approach.
Porter Brothers was one of the UK’s most respected flag makers, operating out of Liverpool from 1905 to 2009. Founded to serve the city’s thriving shipping industry, the company went on to supply flags and bunting for naval vessels, state occasions, and even Antarctic expeditions—most famously providing the Union Jack carried by Captain Scott to the South Pole in 1911. Prized by collectors and maritime historians, their flags were also draped over the coffins of national figures such as Winston Churchill and Princess Diana.
Dimensions: 8’ x 26-1/2” (top edge) x 6” (bottom edge)
Blue band is 30-1/2” high
Weight: 7.7 oz.
Condition Notes: Overall excellent condition, with vibrant color retention and intact stitching throughout. The fabric is free of staining and remains crisp and well-preserved. There are a handful of small holes or tears—including two near the tapered end and one in the blue field—all consistent with light operational use. The tapered end also shows evidence of a minor hand-stitched repair. These flaws are subtle, contribute to the flag’s authenticity, and do not detract from its visual impact when displayed. Markings for “DESIGNATING PEN,” “SIZE 5,” and “PORTER BROS LTD. LIVERPOOL 1998” are clear and fully legible. The hoist is traditionally constructed with pierced lashing points with no grommets. A striking and well-preserved example of a late 20th-century naval signal pennant.
