For the outdoorsman … a handsome 5-1/2-inch mid-century hip flask by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield, wrapped in warm chestnut leather with its characteristic viewing window, a classic bayonet-style cap, and removable silver-plated cup. Substantial in the hand, it’s a distinctive gift that works equally well in the field or for display on a gentleman’s desk or bar cart.
James Dixon & Sons, established in 1806, grew to become one of Britain’s best-known makers of silver and electroplate. The firm supplied everything from regimental mess silver to hunting and fishing accessories. Dixon remained a significant exporter into the mid-20th century, and their flasks appear frequently in British military kit lists and outfitters’ catalogues of the period. The quarter-pint format—stamped here with the simple ‘4’—was one of the largest Dixon offered.
