For the woodworker … a large English wooden spokeshave dating to around 1880-1920, measuring 11 inches in length and formed in beechwood with a brass sole and steel iron. In remarkable overall condition, the body shows a rich, time-earned patina and is marked with the original owner’s name, “A. WHATELEY,” inscribed along one arm. The longer, more substantial form distinguishes it from smaller cabinetmaker examples and would display beautifully on a workbench, shelf, or in a gentleman’s study.
Spokeshaves of this pattern were standard in joinery and wheelwright shops throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The extended body allows for longer, controlled strokes when shaping curved work such as chair legs, wheel spokes, and tool handles. The open throat design allows for efficient shaving of convex and gently curved surfaces, while the wedged steel iron is designed to be adjusted and reset for heavier stock removal or finer finishing passes. The brass sole plate, secured with slotted screws, helps reduce wear at the mouth and provides a smoother bearing surface during use.
Dimensions: 11” x 1-1/8” x 1”
Weight: 4.4 oz.
Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall with honest wear from age and use. Beechwood body retains a warm, even patina with scattered light surface marks, darkened areas, and minor edge wear consistent with long workshop handling. Original steel scraper blade present with a clean, intact cutting edge that feels relatively sharp but has not been tested for use. Brass keeper bar and slotted screws bright and clear with no visible corrosion; all fittings, including blade and brass plate, remain firmly in place. Underside of one arm is stamped “A. WHATELEY.” No makers mark present. Tool has been lightly waxed and polished. Other items in photos not included.
