Large Embroidered (Sewn) Union Jack, 90 × 39 Inches | Vintage English Cotton Flag c. 1930–1970

For the loyalist … an impressive mid-century Union Jack measuring 230cm x 100cm (about 7 feet 6 inches x 3 feet 3 inches), sewn from individual panels of heavy red, white, and navy cotton bunting. The flag features a sturdy natural-fiber hoist reinforced with rope, and finished with a wooden toggle, with both the lanyard and rope channel finished by hand-stitching.  For a working flag, the fabric, colors, and panel construction are all remarkably well-preserved, making it an ideal statement piece for a gentleman’s study, den, or home bar.

Stitched cotton flags with wooden toggles were produced in the UK from the 1930s through the 1960s for schools, civic buildings, merchant offices, and seaside institutions. Made to withstand daily raising and lowering, they were constructed from separate panels, machine-stitched seams, and rope-backed hoists—features that distinguish functional flags like ours from printed versions or later synthetic examples intended purely for decoration.

Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall with bright, well-preserved color across red, white, and navy cotton bunting. All panels remain securely joined with clean machine stitching, intersections of crosses and diagonals showing no discernible separation, fraying, or loss. Natural-fiber hoist reinforced with an internal rope core, finished with hand-secured lanyard and wooden toggle; hoist fabric shows light surface stains and age-related darkening but no visible tears, thinning, or structural weakness. Toggle lanyard braiding remains tight and stable, rope channel and toggle attachment showing intact hand-finishing. Overall color remains strong and consistent. Light creasing from long-term folding present. Flag has not been cleaned or treated in any way. Other items in photos not included.
