Large Wheatley Fly Box with 70+ Trout & Salmon Flies | Vintage Mid-Century Silmalloy Clip Case

For the angler …  a substantial mid-century Wheatley fly box in brushed aluminum, measuring 6" x 3½" and complete with more than 70 vintage trout and salmon flies, arranged over four tiers of original metal clip plates.  Showing honest surface wear from years on the water, it’s a richly appointed piece of classic angling kit — and an ideal gift for the sporting gentleman or fishing enthusiast.

This particular box was sourced in Scotland, the spiritual home of fly fishing, and features a varied and colorful mix of vintage wet flies, featherwing salmon patterns, and attractors — many tied with what appear to be traditional materials such as tinsel, mallard wing, and dyed feather hackles. A few larger patterns were likely tied for display, and two examples (blue and yellow) are without hooks.  A refined and functional selection, British in origin, that echoes the tradition and romance of Highland waters.

Richard Wheatley of England has been producing precision fly boxes since 1860, and remains one of the most respected names in British angling. Their patented clip-plate system and durable “Silmalloy” aluminum has made them the box of choice for serious fly fishers for more than a century.  Today, vintage Wheatley boxes are highly sought after for their timeless design, quality craftsmanship, and enduring field utility.

Condition Notes: Overall in very good vintage condition, with four intact interior clip plates and secure, fully functional brass clips. Aluminum body shows surface wear from use, including small dents, scratches, scuffs, and scattered marks on both faces (see photos), but is structurally sound. Box closes squarely and firmly on both latches, with hinges operating smoothly. Exterior is stamped “Wheatley Silmalloy Metal” and “Made in England,” both clear and legible.  

Includes more than 70 vintage trout and salmon flies in a range of patterns and sizes. Most remain in good condition with intact wings, hackle, and heads; some show age-related fading, fiber loss, or loose dressing consistent with use and storage over decades. Two larger display-style flies are included without hooks. Flies are varied and colorful, representing a mix of wet trout dressings and featherwing salmon patterns, and remain well suited for display, collection, or gentle use.
