For the man of precision … a No. 014 caliper rule by Lufkin, dating to around 1900–1920. Constructed of boxwood with a fitted brass caliper, this compact 4-inch tool was used by machinists, engineers, and patternmakers to take and read internal measurements—slots, grooves, mortises, and recesses—directly at the bench. Still perfectly functional a century later, its small scale and distinctive form make it equally at home displayed on a gentleman’s desk or library shelf.
The Lufkin Rule Company was founded in 1869 in Saginaw, Michigan by Edward Taylor Lufkin. By the early 20th century, the company had grown to become one of the premier American makers of precision measuring instruments, including caliper rules, machinist’s scales, and gauges, and were exporting worldwide.
Our example, sourced in the UK, combines a fixed rule with an integrated inside caliper, allowing internal dimensions to be captured and read on the same instrument rather than transferred to a separate rule. Notably, the inch and 1/16" graduations continue across both faces of the sliding caliper arm, a higher-grade feature indicating the tool was laid out and finished as a single measuring system.
Dimensions: 4-1/4” (closed) x 1” x 1/8”
Weight: 0.8 oz.
Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall. Boxwood body shows light surface wear consistent with age and use, including a small number of tiny nicks along measuring edge. Graduations on boxwood are clear and legible throughout, with 1/8" increments on one face and 1/16" increments on the other. Sliding brass caliper arm is graduated in 1/16" increments on both sides, with markings crisp and readable. Brass fittings and caliper arm are bright and clean with minimal tarnish. Caliper arm moves smoothly and holds position firmly when set for measurement. Marked “LUFKIN” and “No. 014.” Rule has been lightly waxed and polished. Other items in photos not included.
