For the angler … an early Scottish alloy and brass side-casting salmon reel by Peter Malloch of Perth, dating to around 1895 to 1915.  In exceptional condition for its age, the reel features an alloy drum with brass fittings, original horn handle, brass line guide, rotating foot, and working on/off check mechanism. Measuring 3-1/4 inches across the drum and weighing 13 ounces, it has a substantial feel in the hand and a warm untouched patina throughout.  A distinctive piece of Scottish tackle, it would make a striking display in a gentleman’s study, library, or riverside cabin.

Peter Malloch established his tackle business in 1872, and by the 1880s had become one of Scotland’s best-known makers of salmon fishing equipment. In 1884, he patented his side-casting reel design, which allowed the spool to be turned sideways for casting rather than stripping line by hand. The fixed guide eye, revolving drum, and optional check-pawl gave anglers greater casting distance and improved line control. These reels were used primarily for Atlantic salmon fishing on Scottish rivers, and remained in use well into the early twentieth century before modern spinning reels became the standard.

Dimensions: 3-1/4” x 2” (Drum) x 3-1/4” (Foot)
Weight: 13.0 oz

Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall, with only light surface wear consistent with age and use in the field.  Alloy drum displays scattered oxidation, discoloration, and surface marks acquired over more than a century of use, giving the reel a warm untouched patina throughout. Brass fittings, line guide, swiveling foot, and handle all remain intact, securely mounted, and free from visible repairs or structural damage. Drum rotates smoothly, and on/off check mechanism works as intended.  Reel has been lightly cleaned and waxed, but not aggressively polished in order to preserve original finish and character.
