For the collector … a mid-19th century tenon saw by Drabble & Sanderson of Sheffield, featuring a 14-inch blade, full brass back (marked “DRABBLE & SANDERSON, LONDON”), and wooden handle (likely beech) fitted with its original split nuts and bearing the faint trace of a craftsman’s name stamped into one side. Weighing in at an impressive 1 lb. 10 oz, this is no flimsy tool, but a sturdy, balanced instrument designed for precision joinery, now ready for a second life as a workshop accent or collector’s piece.
Founded in 1825, Drabble & Sanderson earned a reputation as one of the UK’s premier makers of edge tools. Often compared to Henry Disston in the United States, the firm supplied generations of cabinetmakers, carpenters, and tradesmen with high-quality saws known for craftsmanship and reliability, and remained a family-owned operation until they were acquired in 1911 by Spear & Jackson.
Our tenon saw would have been used for cutting precise joints by hand, particularly in mortise-and-tenon work. It has been lightly cleaned and waxed to preserve its appearance but purposely not otherwise restored or sharpened. The handle, blade, and spine retain a handsome patina bearing the wear and marks of a well-used tool.
Dimensions: (Blade) 14” x 2-1/4” (at tip) x 3-1/8 (at handle); (Handle) 4-5/8” x 4-1/2” x 7/8”
Weight: 1 lb. 10 oz.
Condition notes: overall in very good condition for age. Blade, spine, and handle show general wear and marks throughout, including small areas of paint on handle. Some surface corrosion present on blade, which remains secure and structurally sound. Beech handle fits tightly with no wobble, and shows no visible cracks or splits. All three original split nuts are intact, with natural tarnish on both sides; they have not been polished. One cheek of the handle bears the faint, indistinct stamp of a previous owner's name. The saw has been lightly cleaned and waxed but not otherwise restored or sharpened, in order to retain its original patina. Other items in photos not included.
