Mid-century Silver Plate Wine Funnel | Vintage English Barware

For the wine-lover … an attractive mid-century English silver-plated wine funnel with a pierced strainer and beaded rim.  Measuring 5-1/4 inches in height, it features a tapered spout and a small lip designed to sit on the rim of a decanter while pouring. Formed as a single piece with a perforated plate, it reflects the streamlined barware designs produced in Britain during the mid-1900s.  In excellent vintage condition with bright plating throughout, it would make a striking addition to a gentleman’s drinks tray or sideboard.

Wine funnels were first introduced in the late 18th century for decanting older bottled wines like claret and port. Over time, funnels were fitted with pierced plates or strainers to catch the natural sediment that forms during aging, allowing wine to pass cleanly into a decanter while retaining the lees in the funnel bowl.

Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall with minimal signs of wear. Silver plate across the bowl, rim, and spout remains bright and even with only faint surface marks from normal handling and polishing, and no visible dents, distortion, or plate loss. Integrated pierced strainer plate is clean and firmly fixed within the bowl with no looseness or movement. Tapered spout is straight and well formed, and the small lip on the rim remains intact and properly shaped. No maker’s mark or hallmarks present. Funnel has been lightly cleaned and polished while retaining its vintage character. Other items in photos not included.
