For the entertainer … an enchanting pair of Victorian silver plate grape shears, displaying an elegant hammered pattern on the handles and intricate detailing on the two blades, in keeping with the style and workmanship of the late 1800s. Measuring 5-3/4”, they would add a unique, refined touch to a gentleman’s side table, bar cart, or dinner service.
Grape shears emerged in the mid-1800s as a response to the strict dining etiquette of the Victorian era. They were designed to allow diners to cut small clusters of grapes from larger bunches without using their hands, which would have been considered improper at formal dining tables. Grape shears typically feature long handles and short blades, often with ornate decorations, and many include a flange on one blade, as this pair does, to help transfer the cluster of grapes to a serving plate. Grape shears were a staple at dessert courses, where grapes were often displayed in elaborate centerpieces.
Condition Notes: Minor wear and tarnish on blades consistent with age and use, but otherwise shears are in excellent antique condition and respond well to silver polish. Marked “EPNS” on one finger loop. See photos for more detail and feel free to contact the shop with any questions before purchase.
