Pair of English Hand-Blown Port Glasses from Mid-1800s | Starburst Design, Victorian Antique Barware

For the man of leisure … a graceful pair of hand-blown English port glasses from the mid-1800s. Standing just over four inches high, each holds three fluid ounces and features fine wheel-engraved starbursts, framed at the rim with a line-and-dash border typical of Victorian table glass.  Both exhibit visible pontil marks at the base, confirming their handmade origin. They remain in excellent condition and would make a refined addition to a gentleman’s bar cart or drinks tray, as usable today as they were 170 years ago.

Glasses of this type were staples of the Victorian table, used for fortified wines such as port or sherry after dinner. The small capacity reflects the drinking customs of the age, when liqueurs and digestifs were served in measured portions. The starburst engraving, fashionable in the mid-19th century, catches light beautifully and makes this pair as much at home in a modern cocktail setting as they were in a Victorian dining room.

Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall. Both glasses are free from chips, cracks, or scratches. Each base shows an irregular pontil scar, confirming hand-blown manufacture. Engraving remains crisp and well-defined, with clear starbursts and a finely cut line-and-dash border around the rim. Surfaces are bright and transparent with no clouding or staining. Both glasses stand securely without wobble. Other items in photos not included.
