For the woodworker … a pair of handsome English gouge chisels, measuring 12-3/4 inches and 10-1/2 inches respectively, each formed with turned hardwood handles (likely beech), brass ferrules, and forged steel blades, and dating to around 1939-1957.  The larger chisel is stamped “Woodcock Sheffield” (partially rubbed), and the smaller tool bears what appears to be an owner’s stamp of “LY”.  Both blades have been lightly cleaned and waxed while preserving original patina, and both handles remain in exceptional condition with rich color, crisp shaping, and beautifully figured grain.

The firm of James Woodcock was founded around 1860, and in 1939 changed their name to F. Woodcock & Son Tools Ltd.  They operated at a time when English toolmaking was at its peak, and Sheffield firmly established as its capital.  Though lesser known today compared to names such as Marples or Sorby, Woodcock tools are highly regarded by woodworkers and collectors for their steel quality, edge retention, and honest Sheffield workmanship.

Dimensions: (Larger Chisel) 12-3/4” Long, 1-1/2” Wide Blade; (Smaller Chisel) 10-1/2” Long x 7/8” Wide Blade
Weight: (Combined) 1 lb. 2.6 oz.

Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall, with light, honest wear consistent with age, workshop use, and careful storage. Both forged steel blades display age-related patina, scattered mottling, and areas of darker oxidation consistent with long-term use, with no active rust, cracks, bends, or structural damage observed. Steel surfaces have been lightly cleaned and waxed to remove surface grime while intentionally preserving original patina. The larger chisel retains a partially rubbed maker’s mark reading “DCOCK FFIELD,” consistent with F. Woodcock Sheffield, while the smaller tool bears what appears to be an owner’s stamp of “LY.” Blade edges appear relatively sharp to the touch, though neither chisel has been freshly sharpened, honed, or tested in use. Turned hardwood handles remain in excellent condition with minimal surface wear, rich color, attractive grain, and crisp shaping throughout, while brass ferrules remain secure and clean. All elements are firmly joined, with no looseness, wobble, or movement between handles, ferrules, and blades. Other items shown in photos not included.
