For the craftsman …  a handsome Victorian side rebate (rabbet) plane in beech, marked “FAIRCLOUGH LIVERPOOL” and dating to around 1860–1880.  Measuring 9-1/4 inches in length, the plane retains its original wedge and iron, a warm honey-brown patina, and honest wear consistent with professional use.  Still appearing fully capable as a practical tool, it would also display beautifully in a gentleman’s workshop, study, or library.

Robert Fairclough & Co. is recorded as a planemaker and tool dealer operating from 72 Byrom Street in Liverpool as early as 1853, though the firm no longer appears in trade directories by the early 1890s. Surviving Fairclough planes are relatively uncommon, suggesting a small provincial business supplying working tools to Liverpool’s joiners, shipwrights, and building trades during the height of the city’s industrial and maritime growth.

Dimensions (Body): 9-1/4 x 3-3/8” x 1”
Weight: 10.7 oz.

Condition Notes: Overall in excellent antique condition, displaying honest wear consistent with regular workshop use. Solid beech body retains a rich, even patina throughout, with smooth handling wear, gently rounded edges, and scattered black staining or workshop spotting consistent with age. Maker’s stamp remains clearly legible on end of body: “FAIRCLOUGH LIVERPOOL.” Small chip present at one corner of toe (see photos), with no cracks, structural repairs, or other significant losses noted. Original wedge and iron remain well seated and properly fitted; neither has been removed for inspection. Cutting edge appears sharp, though plane has not been tested in use, and iron shows expected age-related oxidation and surface patina. Tool has been gently polished and waxed to preserve original patina.  Other items in photos not included.
