For the craftsman … a handsome mid-century “torpedo” spirit level by Rabone-Chesterman, Model No. 1626, measuring a full 12 inches in length and crafted with a slim hardwood body (likely mahogany) with a brass top plate and end caps. Clean and fully functional with both vials clear and intact, and marked by decades of honest workshop use, it carries the subtle patina and stamped owner’s name (“B. DEAN”) that distinguish a tool made for real work, though its classic slimline form would also display beautifully on a gentleman’s workbench or desk.
Rabone-Chesterman was formed in 1963 when two of England’s most respected precision-tool makers—J. Rabone & Sons and Chesterman—merged to create a single powerhouse in measuring and layout tools. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, their levels, rules, and squares were prized for accuracy and durability, long before plastic and die-cast aluminum replaced traditional metals on the workbench. The No. 1626 was among their most elegant designs: slim, balanced, and engineered for fine joinery and cabinet work.
Dimensions: 12” x 1-3/8” x 3/4”
Weight: 5.5 oz.
Condition Notes: Very good mid-century condition throughout, with surface wear and scattered marks consistent with age and use. Hardwood body retains an even tone with no cracks, splits, or structural issues. Brass top plate and end caps show mild rubbing and fine scratches appropriate for a workshop tool, all screws original and secure. Both acrylic vials remain clear, intact, and fully functional with no leakage or discoloration. Brass top plate stamped “Rabone Chesterman”, model designation “1626” and “Made in England”. Owner’s name “B. DEAN” inscribed on both top plate and side. Level has been lightly cleaned and polished. Other items in photos not included.
