For the craftsman … a beautiful 1930s Stanley “torpedo” spirit level model 259, crafted in walnut with a nickel-plated steel top plate and two cats-eye vials, both intact and functional.  In remarkable condition for its age, with a warm patina that speaks to years of use, this is a treasured instrument that would display beautifully in a gentleman’s study or workshop.

Measuring 9” long, the Model 259 level was first introduced in 1936, and modified slightly in 1938 when the company switched to walnut from the original mahogany and added a groove to each side that made the level easier to pick up.  The model was further altered during the war years (when the top plate was finished in gun blue) and then in 1947, when the torpedo shape was made more tapered.  This appears to be a pre-war level dating from 1938-39.

The Stanley Rule & Level Company was established in 1857 by Henry Stanley in New Britain, Connecticut.  In 1920, the company was acquired by Stanley Works (a firm founded by Henry’s cousin Frederick).  Throughout its rich history, the Stanley name has been known for innovation and quality, eventually becoming the world leader in hand tools.

Size: 9” x 1-1/4” x 11/16”
Weight: 3.4 oz.

Condition notes: Overall in very good vintage condition, with minor nicks and abrasions consistent with age.  Varnish is worn and stained but polishes beautifully.  Top plate (marked STANLEY, MADE IN USA, and NO. 259) shows minor tarnish.  Top and side (plumb) vials are intact and functional.  See photos for more detail or contact the shop with any questions before purchase.  Recommended for decorative use only.
