Remarkable 3” Osprey Wood & Brass Fishing Reel by Wilkes

For the angler …  a stunning 3-inch Nottingham-style wood and brass fishing reel from the early 1900s by British maker Wilkes, sold under the Osprey brand. In immaculate condition, this reel showcases finely turned concentric rings, gleaming brass fittings, and brown ebonite handles. A rich, even varnish makes this a standout addition to any gentleman’s desk, bookshelf, or side table, and a memorable Father’s Day gift for the fishing enthusiast.

Nottingham-style reels originated in and around Nottingham, England, where they evolved from techniques used to make wooden spools used in lace-making.  Nottingham reels are typically light, free-running, wooden reels primarily designed for river fishing. 

Wilkes was a respected name in British fishing tackle, based in Studley, Warwickshire, founded in 1815 and active in the trade until they were acquired by Milwards in the 1930s.  Wilkes often commissioned reels from other reputable manufacturers, notably Reuben Heaton of Birmingham, and then sold them under the Wilkes name.  Osprey was a Wilkes trademark used on reels, rods, hooks, and lures.

Condition Notes: In excellent overall condition, with a smooth, even varnish that highlights the wood’s natural grain. Tiny gouge to the outside perimeter of the spool, and other minor scratches and indentations, mostly under varnish and barely noticeable.  Brass fittings show minimal wear.  Reel spins freely and smoothly, with no on-off ratchet. Brass foot is stamped “WILKES OSPREY BRAND.”
