Retro 1960s German Pathfinder Opisometer (Map Measurer) & Compass

For the traveler … a vintage German “Pathfinder” map measurer (opisometer) and compass, likely from the 1960s.  Before Google Maps, opisometers – also known as curvimeters – were used for measuring distances on maps and were popular from the late 1800s through much of the 20th century until digital and GPS technologies became widespread.

To use an opisometer, you set the pointer to zero by rotating the small wheel, then place the instrument at your chosen starting point on a printed map and gently roll the wheel along the route to the intended destination.  After tracing the route, the dial will show the distance traveled in miles and kilometers.  This version comes with a handy compass on the reverse side, and would make a fun and unique gift for the gentleman traveler.

Made in Western Germany, the Pathfinder opisometer came with the choice of one of two dials, one (as in this example) being Statute Miles/Kilometres/Nautical Miles.  The reverse side was either another measuring dial or a magnetic compass.  The standard pathfinder came with a short handle and carrying loop, but ours – with a longer handle – is much easier to manipulate when following a line on a map, spinning the handle between the finger tips as you go.

Condition notes: Slight haziness to measuring glass but all printing is clear and legible.  Otherwise in very good vintage condition.  Perfectly functional but not tested for accuracy.
