For the outdoorsman … a 1948 edition of “Salmon Fishing: A New Philosophy” by Richard Waddington, published in New York by Charles Scribner’s Sons and printed in Great Britain. A thoughtful mid-century volume that blends science and sport, this influential work explores the instincts and behavior of the Atlantic salmon through both observation and reasoned analysis. An engaging read for anglers, naturalists, and collectors alike, and a handsome addition to any gentleman’s study, library, or riverside cabin.
Waddington’s study marked a turning point in postwar angling thought—challenging long-held assumptions about how and why salmon take the fly. Illustrated with photographs and diagrams, it remains one of the most important and quietly elegant fishing books of its era. Our copy is bound in light blue cloth with its original dust jacket intact (and protected by a plastic sleeve), showing light edge wear and a few small tears but otherwise very clean, tight, and well-preserved.
Size: 8” x 5-1/4” x 7/8”
Weight: 11.0 oz.
Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall. Dust jacket remains intact and protected in a clear sleeve, showing light edge wear, small closed tears, and minor surface rubbing along the spine and corners. Bound in grey cloth with red lettering, showing minimal shelf wear. Previous owner’s name is stamped in several places on the front and rear endpapers, with faint residue from a removed label on the front flyleaf. Pages are otherwise clean, bright, and free of markings or foxing. Binding is firm and square with no looseness or separation. A well-preserved and complete example of Waddington’s 1948 classic.
