For the woodworker … a set of three vintage English bevel-edged chisels, measuring 10, 10-1/2, and 9-7/8 inches respectively, and dating to around 1900-1925.  Each is formed with turned hardwood handles (possibly fruitwood or beech), forged steel blades, and two with brass ferrules. The 10-inch chisel is stamped “NEWEY & SONS” and marked “WARRANTED CAST STEEL” on the reverse, while the two other chisels are unmarked.  All three blades have been lightly cleaned and waxed while preserving original patina, and the handles remain in excellent condition, displaying rich color, attractive grain, and a smooth age-darkened surface.

Thomas Newey & Sons was a highly respected Birmingham tool manufacturer that traced its origins to the 18th century.  The two larger chisels, including the Newey, are both bench chisels, used by cabinetmakers, joiners, and woodworkers for trimming joints, paring shoulders, fitting hardware, and general bench work.  The smaller, thinner chisel, beveled on the sides and end, is a paring chisel intended for fine hand-push work where a mallet was not used.

Dimensions: (Hewey Bench Chisel) 10” Long, 1” Wide Blade; (Unmarked Bench Chisel) 10-1/2” Long, 3/4” Wide Blade; (Unmarked Parer Chisel) 9-7/8” Long, 1/2” Wide Blade
Weight: (Combined) 1 lb. 3.3 oz.

Condition Notes: Very good antique condition overall, with light, honest wear consistent with age, workshop use, and careful storage. Turned hardwood handles remain in excellent condition, with rich color, attractive grain, smooth age-darkened patina, and minimal surface wear. Small dents and tiny white marks, possibly paint, are visible on two handles upon close inspection. Forged steel blades display age-related oxidation, scattered mottling, and darker patina consistent with long-term use, with no active rust, cracks, bends, or structural damage observed. Steel surfaces have been lightly cleaned and waxed to remove surface grime while preserving original patina. Blade edges appear relatively sharp, though chisels have not been freshly sharpened, honed, or tested in use. Brass ferrules on two chisels show some oxidation and surface wear while remaining secure. All elements are firmly joined, with no looseness, wobble, or movement observed between handles, ferrules, and blades. Other items shown in photos not included.
