For the technician … a trio of mid-century steel rules, each with its own story, function, and maker’s mark—most notably a 1945 British military-issued rule from ABC Rules & Measures.  With origins spanning wartime London to 1960s New York, these precision rules are etched in fine divisions and were designed for machinists, engineers, and draftsmen who prized accuracy and durability.  Still highly usable, they’d make an ideal gift for any gentleman who appreciates vintage tools.

The 6-inch ABC Rules & Measures example is official British military issue, dated 1945 and stamped with both a government pattern number and two distinct broad arrow marks, a symbol used on British military or government property.

The 10-inch Rabone Chesterman No. 33 dates to the 1960s–70s. Labeled a “Conversion Rule,” it features both metric and imperial scales and shows some tarnish consistent with age, but remains fully legible and clearly stamped.

The 6-inch General 309-N, likely from the 1950s–60s, was made in New York, is etched in 32nds and 64ths, and is marked with factory inspection numbers on the reverse.

Dimensions:
Rabone – 10” x 1”
General – 6” x 5/8”
ABC – 6-1/2” x 3/4"

Weight (Set): 2.8 oz

Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall. All three rules show light surface wear consistent with age and use, with clear and legible markings throughout. The Rabone Chesterman is stamped Rabone Chesterman, No. 33, Conversion Rule, and Made in England.  It displays moderate tarnish concentrated near the zero end, but all engraved text and scale markings remain sharp and fully readable. The General is marked No. 309N, General, Made in U.S.A., and Stainless Steel.  It is clean and bright, with crisp divisions in 32nds and 64ths and factory inspection stamps (126 and MS) visible on the reverse. The ABC Rules & Measures is marked Patt. No. R/M. 1571, 1945, ABC Rules & Measures London, and Stainless, and bears two distinct broad arrow marks confirming official British military issue. Surfaces on all three rules remain smooth and unbent, with no damage or corrosion beyond tarnish noted. Other items in photos not included.
