For the woodworker … a set of three vintage woodworking chisels measuring 7-3/4, 8-1/4, and 9 inches respectively, including two bevel-edge socket chisels by Marples and Canadian Champion, together with a narrow firmer chisel by Robert Sorby. The Marples dates to around 1935-1955, the Sorby to around 1940-1960, and the Champion to around 1955-1965. All three have forged steel blades and turned hardwood handles, with the two darker handles likely beech and the lighter Sorby handle probably boxwood. In excellent vintage condition, they make a handsome group suitable for a gentleman’s workshop, study, or collection of traditional woodworking tools.
W. Marples & Sons and Robert Sorby were both major Sheffield edge-tool makers with origins dating back to the 1800s, while Canadian Champion was a Canadian tool brand associated with Engineering Tools & Forgings Ltd. (ETF) of St. Catharines, Ontario. (The brand appears in an ETF catalog from 1962.) Together, the group represents three reputable British and Canadian tool brands operating in the middle decades of the 20th century.
Dimensions: (Marples Socket Chisel) 7-3/4” Long, 5/8” Wide Blade; (Champion Socket Chisel) 9” Long, 3/4” Wide Blade; (Sorby Firmer Chisel) 8-1/4” Long, 3/8” Wide Blade (at its widest point)
Weight: (Combined) 13.8 oz.
Condition Notes: Excellent vintage condition overall, with light, honest wear consistent with age, workshop use, and careful storage. Turned hardwood handles display attractive grain, smooth surfaces, and only the tiniest of marks and handling wear. Forged steel blades display age-related oxidation, mottling, and discoloration consistent with long-term use, with no active rust, cracks, bends, or structural damage observed. Marples blade shows several small chips along cutting edge, while remaining structurally sound with ample steel present for future sharpening if desired. Blade edges otherwise appear relatively sharp on all three chisels but have not been freshly sharpened, honed, or tested in use. Steel surfaces have been lightly cleaned and oiled while preserving original patina. Ferrules and socket fittings remain secure, with no looseness or movement observed between handles and blades. Markings include “CHAMPION” on Champion chisel, “W. MARPLES & SONS” with shamrock logo and “SHEFFIELD ENGLAND” on Marples chisel, and “ROBT SORBY” on Sorby chisel. Other items shown in photos not included.
