For the outdoorsman … a 1938 second edition of “Spinning Up to Date: Trout, Salmon & Pike” by Jock Scott, published in London by Seeley Service & Co. Ltd. Illustrated with a full-page color plate of period spinning lures, along with photographs and practical diagrams, the book explains tackle, casting methods, lure selection, and techniques for fishing both rivers and still waters. Written for the working angler rather than the specialist collector, it remains an engaging read and an attractive addition to a fishing library, gentleman’s study, or lakeside cabin.
“Jock Scott” was the pen name of British angling writer Donald G. Ferris Rudd, who published several books on game fishing and is best remembered for compiling “Greased Line Fishing for Salmon” from the papers and fishing records of A. H. E. Wood. Rudd’s practical writing found a natural home with Seeley Service, the London publisher behind a substantial list of sporting and outdoor books and the Lonsdale Library of Sports, Games and Pastimes, launched in 1929.
