For the outdoorsman … an exceptional early 1900s Nottingham-style wood and brass fishing reel, measuring a generous 3-1/2 inches in diameter, a size traditionally favored for river angling with light tackle. Crafted from richly grained hardwood with brass fittings and black ebonite handles set into flush brass mounts, it carries a warm, time-softened patina and the mark “Made in England.” As a display piece and period accent, it would look wonderful on a gentleman’s desk, study shelf, or lakeside retreat.
Nottingham-style reels trace their origins to the city’s lace-making industry, where they evolved from techniques used to make wooden bobbins. Nottingham reels are typically light, free-running, wooden reels primarily designed for river fishing.
