For the craftsman … a superb English “Number 1625” spirit level, made by J. Rabone & Sons around 1950.  Constructed of rosewood with brass fittings, it measures 6 inches in length, and is a splendid example of Rabone’s torpedo-like design (often referred to as a boat level.)  Highly decorative as well as functional, it would display beautifully in a gentleman’s study or workshop.

The top plate of the level is engraved “J. Rabone & Sons, Birmingham. Made in England" and “Warranted Correct, No. 1625.”  The top spirit vial is bright and clear, and there is a secondary, vertical vial viewed from each side.  The rosewood displays a fine grain and deep, rich hues with only minimal wear in evidence.  Overall, a very handsome tool in excellent vintage condition.

John Rabone & Sons were a pre-eminent British manufacturer of rules and measuring devices, with origins dating back to the late 1700s.  The company operated as a family business until it merged with Chesterman & Co of Sheffield in 1963.

Dimensions: 6” x 1.25” x 0.625”
Weight: 2.6 ounces
Condition Notes: Minor scratches, wear, and indentation consistent with age and use.  Brass is bright and clear of tarnish.  Overall in excellent vintage condition.  See photos for more detail or contact shop with questions.
