For the collector … an exceptional 19th-century English rope gauge in brass and boxwood, complete with dual sliding scales and an integrated caliper arm. In remarkable condition with minimal wear for its age, this is a rare and practical piece of maritime engineering history. It would make a treasured addition to a tool collection, or a handsome conversation piece for a gentleman’s desk or side table.
Rope gauges were essential tools aboard ships and in dockyards, used by riggers, shipbuilders, and marine suppliers to quickly measure rope thickness and convert that figure to standardized weights per fathom. This allowed crews to safely calculate load limits, estimate material needs, and choose the right rope for a given task. An early form of analog calculator, rope gauges were built for speed and accuracy in demanding environments.
Our example is marked "Improved Guage (sic) arranged by W. H. Laidler" and “Mr. R. May – London.” William H. Laidler (1850-1893) was an engineer at a ropeworks in Bow Common, Middlesex, and filed a patent for an improved gauge in 1875. We believe R. May is the retailer, possibly a small London ironmonger or chandlery, as the name can’t be located in period directories. The use of dual brass sliders, a lesser-known retailer, and overall condition make this early rope gauge a standout find.
Dimensions: 6-3/8” x 1-7/8” x 1/8”
Weight: 2.8 oz.
Condition Notes: Overall excellent condition, with only minimal tarnish to the brass components. The primary brass slide with integrated caliper moves smoothly and seats firmly for accurate measurement. The second brass scale, located below the caliper slide, appears to be fixed in place—it was designed to move but is currently stuck, and has not been forced. The boxwood body is clean and well-preserved, with crisp, fully legible markings throughout. On the reverse, the engraved rope tables remain clear, listing standards for hemp rope, manilla, shroud, and cable. See photos for more details, and feel free to DM with any questions prior to purchase.
