Victorian Gunpowder Flask c. 1850-1870 | Antique Copper & Brass Sporting Accessory

For the sportsman … a Victorian copper and brass gunpowder flask measuring 7-1/2 inches in length and dating to around 1850-1870. Formed in a ribbed pear-shaped pattern with foliate shoulder detail, the flask is fitted with a spring-loaded brass charger, side thumb lever, and removable brass top, all housed within a hand-formed copper body. In very good antique condition with honest surface wear and working mechanism throughout, it would make a unique gift and distinctive display piece for a gentleman’s study, library or gun room.

Gunpowder flasks of this type were carried by sportsmen, gamekeepers, and target shooters in the mid-1800s before self-contained metallic cartridges became standard. The copper body is formed from two pressed halves joined at the side seams, while the ribbed paneling adds both grip and structural rigidity.  Powder was dispensed through the brass charger by depressing the side thumb lever, allowing a measured charge to be poured directly into the muzzle.

Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall.  Copper body displays scattered surface marks, small dents, areas of age-related discoloration, and natural patina throughout, all consistent with age and use in the field, with no visible splits, seam separation, structural weakness, or evidence of later repair. Brass charger, removable top, and side thumb lever remain complete, with thumb lever operating as intended at time of inspection. Foliate embossing and ribbed paneling remain well defined, with expected rubbing to higher points from handling over time. Offered as an antique collectible and display piece only. Flask has been gently cleaned and waxed to preserve original patina.  Other items in photos not included.
