For the wine-lover … a handsome English silver-plate wine funnel dating from 1880-1910 and made by Atkin Brothers of Sheffield, complete with its original fitted strainer. This is a compact, well-crafted piece of Victorian barware, with a waisted midsection, beaded strainer rim, and a long tapered spout—details that lift it above the simpler, smooth-walled examples of the period. In excellent condition for its age, with a form that would display beautifully on any bar cart or drinks tray, this would make an ideal gift for the gentleman wine enthusiast.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, wine funnels were indispensable when decanting older and aged wines—particularly vintage port—where sediment naturally collects over decades. The removable strainer catches the lees, the bowl rests securely in the funnel body, and the cutaway spout helps prevent “glugging” as wine is poured into a narrow bottle neck.
With origins dating back to the 1750s, Atkin Brothers were among Sheffield’s best-known Victorian and Edwardian producers of silver and electroplate, supplying quality tableware to both domestic and export markets until they became part of Mappin & Webb in 1958.
Dimensions: 4-1/2” long x 2-1/2” wide
Weight: 4.9 oz.
Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall, with light, honest wear consistent with age and use. Silver plate on body and strainer remains bright and even, with only minor surface marks from normal handling. Drop-in strainer fits securely in bowl, and single applied lug on rim is intact and well-formed. Tapered spout shows localized wear at tip where acidic wine would have repeatedly contacted the metal during decades of decanting—typical base-metal bloom for functional funnels of this period and not a structural concern. Funnel remains fully usable, though given its age is probably best suited for display or occasional gentle use. Other items in photos not included.
