A lovely example of a Victorian era wooden snuff box, solidly constructed with brass hinges and pins and a metal inlay of a bird design. A beautiful little object, highly tactile, with original color, grain, and patination. The lid closes firmly and snugly with no discernible movement. A scratch on one corner of the lid seems to have occurred many years ago and only adds to the romance of what was likely a well-used item. Would make a special gift, perhaps destined to hold cufflinks, jewelry, or some other treasure, or simply displayed on a desk or side table.
Snuffboxes were used for containing snuff, a mixture of ground tobacco and scented oils, and were very popular in the 18th century and into the early 1900s when snuff-taking was fashionable. Some were highly decorated and valuable objects and became collectors' items.
Dimensions: 2-3/4” L x 1-1/2” W x 3/4” H
Condition Notes: In good overall condition with minor scratching and indentations consistent with age and use. One larger scratch of some apparent age on corner of lid. Lid closes firmly and snugly. See photos for more detail or contact us with questions.
